Trust in Technology

Feb 08, 2026

On January 12th, 2026, Gallup released its annual survey results on Americans' Honesty and Ethics Ratings of Professions. Nurses ranked the highest again for the 24th consecutive year in a row with 75% of respondents providing a very high or high score.

The continued trust in nurses ethical and honest practice are of great importance for anyone as we all experience healthcare needs across our lifespans. Nurses are the largest group of healthcare professionals at nearly 5 million. This number is 4 times greater than that of physicians. Nurses are the workforce who interact with patients in the greatest volume of time.

Patients are people who have questions, concerns and want to know that whomever they ask, they can trust to provide honest and accurate answers, even if not the answer one is hoping to receive from them. Healthcare is a human experience.

The human experience requires an understanding of the human body and the sciences that contribute to addressing conditions that arise. Nursing is a science. Medicine is a science, Pharmacy is a science. Informatics is a science. Information technology is a science. All of these sciences (and many more) are essential today to deliver the most informed, individualized and high quality care.

Yet, to do so requires that we leverage technology. Technology can be in a hardware, software, or middleware format. Technology is used to support healthcare. To support healthcare, we must trust it.

To trust is to believe that something is safe and reliable. The stethoscope, calculator, electrocardiogram, blood glucose monitor, and many more technologies are trusted each day to assist in the facilitation of quality care delivery.

The same must be true of new technologies that emerge. This includes AI solutions and more. One way to increase trust is to be an active participant in decisions on what is needed and how advanced tools can be of assistance in nursing and healthcare. Learning more about AI to be more of an active participant can also be beneficial.

Soon, digital tools will be seen as an extension of our tools in the same way that the thermometer and blood pressure cuff are today.
