Board certification provides informatics nurses with the confidence in knowing that they meet the standards of informatics nursing through the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) in their knowledge, application and practice of the specialty. Additionally, the board certification is demonstrable to the nurse’s employer and health care organization. Nurses may have internal and/or external motivation to become board certified as an Informatics Nurse. There may be an interest to fulfill a goal and achieve the certification level in the specialty practice. There may be an interest from the health care organization to have informatics nurses board certified as part of their nursing excellence and path toward Magnet. Regardless of the reason, the certification ensures that you are recognized by ANCC in the specialty practice.

ANCC provides details on eligibility on their website. Additionally, we have created a self-evaluation form for you to determine your path toward eligibility for the Informatics Nurse board certification exam. 

The NICER program on demand provides 10 Contact Hours upon completion of the program. These 10 hours can be used toward the 30 required to be eligible to sit for the exam. 

You may send unofficial or official transcripts to ANCC for the degree requirements. 

The ANCC suggests allowing 3 weeks from the time of submitting all your materials until receiving your email that provides the Authorization to Test. 

Over 90% of the NICER program participants pass the ANCC Informatics Nurse board certification exam on the first attempt and 98% by the second attempt.
